Molybdenum market update on September 17, 2026

The overall domestic molybdenum market maintained a high and firm operation.

With downstream demand improving and suppliers having strong willingness to hold back sales and support prices, prices of most products were at relatively high levels within the year, order growth was acceptable, and industry participants had considerable expectations for the future market.

On the molybdenum concentrate market, buying and selling activity was active, with product transaction prices at around RMB 5,490/ton-degree. Downstream users had relatively high initiative in stockpiling, and molybdenum concentrate prices were considerable, leading some suppliers to increase their awareness of taking profits.

On the ferromolybdenum market, the overall situation was relatively awkward, mainly attributable to the difficulty in finding low-priced sources in the market and the limited increase in steel tender prices. Intermediate smelting enterprises faced difficulties in quoting, with quotations at around RMB 343,000/ton. Up to now, the total volume of ferromolybdenum tenders this month is approximately 10,000 tons.

On the molybdenum chemical and its products market, wait-and-see sentiment was strong. Constrained by supply and demand, prices failed to rise along with raw materials. Today, the prices of sodium molybdate, ammonium heptamolybdate, and molybdenum powder were approximately RMB 233,000/ton, RMB 333,000/ton, and RMB 615/kg, respectively.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in early September 2026, the steel product inventory of key monitored steel enterprises was 16.52 million tons, increased by 270,000 tons compared with the previous ten-day period, up 1.7%; increased by 2.38 million tons compared with the beginning of the year, up 16.8%; decreased by 660,000 tons compared with the same ten-day period of the previous month, down 3.8%; increased by 700,000 tons compared with the same ten-day period of last year, up 4.4%; increased by 1.55 million tons compared with the same ten-day period of the year before last, up 10.4%. Among them, steel product inventory in Northeast China increased by 200,000 tons, in East China increased by 150,000 tons, in Southwest China increased by 70,000 tons, in Central South China increased by 410,000 tons, in North China decreased by 520,000 tons, and in Northwest China decreased by 40,000 tons.
