Molybdenum market update on September 16, 2026

Domestic molybdenum prices overall showed a firm upward trend, among which the price of molybdenum concentrate increased by RMB 50/ton-degree to RMB 5,490/ton-degree; the price of ferromolybdenum increased by RMB 1,000/ton to RMB 343,000/ton; and the price of molybdenum oxide increased by RMB 50/ton-degree to RMB 5,600/ton-degree.

Under this market condition, traders had good enthusiasm for entering the market, and transaction pace was acceptable.

On the molybdenum concentrate market, the market condition was optimistic. Increased inquiry and purchasing enthusiasm from ferromolybdenum manufacturers, tightening spot market supply, and the recent volatile rise in international molybdenum prices jointly boosted suppliers' confidence in raising prices. Today, the international molybdenum oxide price was approximately USD 33.85/lb Mo, and the European ferromolybdenum price was approximately USD 77.75/kg Mo. Recently, a mine in Jiangxi sold 672 tons of 40%-45% grade molybdenum concentrate at a transaction price of RMB 5,455/ton-degree.

On the ferromolybdenum market, overall operations were under pressure. Although steel tender volumes and prices rose, the increase in steel tender prices was limited. Coupled with the significant rise in raw material prices, intermediate smelting enterprises faced relatively large resistance in raising quotations.

On the molybdenum chemical and its products market, wait-and-see sentiment was strong, product prices showed no significant fluctuations for the time being, and transactions remained stable. Currently, the prices of ammonium tetramolybdate, molybdenum powder, and molybdenum bars were approximately RMB 327,000/ton, RMB 615/kg, and RMB 620/kg, respectively.

In terms of news, data from the World Stainless Association shows that in the first half of 2026, stainless steel crude steel production was 33 million tons, increased by 5% year-on-year. Among them, Asian stainless steel crude steel production was 28.3 million tons, increased by 6.1% year-on-year; EU stainless steel crude steel production was 2.9 million tons, decreased by 3.7% year-on-year; US stainless steel crude steel production was 1.1 million tons, increased by 2.3% year-on-year; and stainless steel crude steel production in other countries was 600,000 tons, increased by 2.9% year-on-year.
