Molybdenum market update on August 6, 2026

The overall domestic molybdenum market maintained a sideways operation. Against the background of tight raw material supply with firm prices and complex and changing global economic conditions, downstream demand was mostly rigid, with limited new orders.

On the molybdenum concentrate market, wait-and-see sentiment was strong. Although downstream inquiry and purchasing initiative had weakened compared with the previous period, due to tight spot market supply with difficulty in future increases, as well as the rising international molybdenum market, suppliers generally had strong sentiment to maintain firm prices.

On the ferromolybdenum market, overall operations were under pressure. Under the contradiction between low willingness of molybdenum mining enterprises to reduce prices for shipments and strong resistance from steel enterprises to high-priced sources, intermediate smelting enterprises were in a dilemma in quoting prices, with quotations stable at around RMB 337,000/ton.

On the molybdenum chemical and its products market, mainstream product prices fluctuated within a narrow range, with the prices of sodium molybdate, ammonium heptamolybdate, and molybdenum powder at approximately RMB 231,000/ton, RMB 330,000/ton, and RMB 608/kg, respectively. This was mainly due to a relatively balanced supply-demand relationship.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in June 2026, China exported 2.871 million tons of primary products (steel billets, pig iron, direct reduced iron, and recycled steel raw materials), increased by 58.2% month-on-month; imported 372,000 tons of primary products, increased by 4.5% month-on-month. From January to June, China's cumulative exports of primary products were 9.638 million tons, increased by 63.1% year-on-year; cumulative imports of primary products were 1.659 million tons, increased by 75.1% year-on-year.
