Molybdenum market update on July 28, 2026

The overall domestic molybdenum market performed generally. With downstream users' willingness to inquire and purchase declining and suppliers having limited room for concessions, product prices adjusted within a narrow range, and order growth was slow.

Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum decreased by approximately RMB 20/ton-degree and RMB 3,000/ton, respectively.

From the perspective of bullish factors, first, factors such as frequent high-temperature and rainy weather, relatively high energy prices for oil and gas, strong environmental protection efforts, and aging ore grades jointly led to a slowdown in the production pace of some molybdenum manufacturers. Coupled with the relatively large proportion of outstanding orders for many suppliers, this further supported firm product prices. Second, the molybdenum downstream industry is developing well, and the market has relatively large demand for molybdenum products, which is an important source of motivation for holders' confidence in maintaining prices. Up to now, this month's total steel tenders for ferromolybdenum are approximately 14,000 tons.

From the perspective of bearish factors, first, the previous volatile upward trend of molybdenum product prices and their current relatively high levels, combined with generally tight funding among buyers, further suppressed the increase in market inquiry and purchasing activity; second, weakening steel tender prices are not conducive to suppliers raising quotations.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in mid-July 2026, key monitored steel enterprises produced a total of 20.15 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily output of 2.015 million tons, decreased by 0.4% month-on-month in daily output. By region, the daily output of crude steel in North China decreased by 15,000 tons, in East China decreased by 9,000 tons, in Northwest China decreased by 9,000 tons, in Southwest China decreased by 4,000 tons, in Northeast China increased by 9,000 tons, and in Central South China increased by 21,000 tons.
