Molybdenum market update on May 22, 2026

This week, the overall domestic molybdenum market weakened compared with last week, mainly reflected in the fluctuating downward movement of molybdenum product prices, the increased willingness of traders to ship goods for cash realization, and the decreased acceptance of high-priced goods among downstream purchasers.

According to CTIA GROUP, the sharp increase in molybdenum prices last week was one of the main factors leading to the cooling of trading activity in the domestic molybdenum market this week. At the same time, overseas molybdenum prices maintained sideways consolidation this week, further suppressing the upward momentum of domestic molybdenum prices.

This week, the molybdenum concentrate price decreased from about RMB 5,225/ton-degree to around RMB 5,100/ton-degree, a decrease of about 2.39%; the ferromolybdenum price decreased from about RMB 335,000/ton to around RMB 323,000/ton, a decrease of about 3.58%; the ammonium heptamolybdate price decreased from about RMB 322,000/ton to around RMB 314,000/ton, a decrease of about 2.48%; the molybdenum powder price decreased from about RMB 610/kg to RMB 598/kg, a decrease of about 1.97%.

According to monitoring data from the Iron and Steel Association, in April, the average value of the China Steel Price Index (CSPI) was 92.53 points, increased by 0.95 points month-on-month, an increase of 1.04%; and decreased by 0.72 points year-on-year, a decrease of 0.77%. Among them, the average value of the CSPI long steel index was 94.70 points, increased by 0.86 points month-on-month, an increase of 0.91%; and decreased by 0.03 points year-on-year, a decrease of 0.03%. The average value of the plate index was 90.53 points, increased by 0.97 points month-on-month, an increase of 1.09%; and decreased by 1.25 points year-on-year, a decrease of 1.37%. As of the end of April 2026, the CSPI stood at 93.70 points, increased by 1.40 points month-on-month, an increase of 1.52%; increased by 1.83 points compared with the end of last year, an increase of 1.99%; and increased by 0.54 points year-on-year, an increase of 0.58%.
