Molybdenum market update on May 25, 2026

On Monday, the domestic molybdenum market as a whole remained under pressure and operated weakly.

Under the circumstances that some suppliers still had strong willingness to realize profits and purchasers basically maintained rigid demand, the prices of most products still decreased to varying degrees, among which the molybdenum concentrate price decreased by about RMB 50/ton-degree, the ferromolybdenum price decreased by about RMB 5,000/ton, and the ammonium tetramolybdate price decreased by about RMB 3,000/ton. Recently, steel enterprises entering the market to tender for ferromolybdenum included Shougang Co., Ltd., Shouguang Juneng Special Steel, Shandong Iron and Steel Group Laiwu Branch, Wuhan Iron and Steel Xiangyang Heavy Equipment, Zhongnan Iron and Steel, Hengyang Valin Steel Tube, Fushun Special Steel, Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes, and Baosteel (Baoshan). The steel tender price was around RMB 315,000/ton.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association showed that in mid-May 2026, the social inventory of the five major steel varieties in 21 cities was 9.54 million tons, decreased by 460,000 tons month-on-month, a decrease of 4.6%, and the inventory decrease expanded somewhat; increased by 2.33 million tons compared with the beginning of the year, an increase of 32.3%; and increased by 1.21 million tons year-on-year, an increase of 14.5%. During the same period, the social inventories of the five major steel varieties all decreased month-on-month, among which rebar was the variety with the largest reduction, while wire rod was the variety with the largest decrease rate. From the year-on-year perspective, the inventories of the five major steel varieties all increased to varying degrees, among which rebar was the variety with the largest increase in volume, while medium and heavy plate was the variety with the largest increase rate.
