Molybdenum market update on May 8, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market generally continued to maintain a high and slightly strong trend, mainly reflected in the continuous price increase of most products, positive trader sentiment, and relatively good actual transactions.

Today, the prices of ferromolybdenum, sodium molybdate, and ammonium heptamolybdate increased by about RMB 2,000/ton, RMB 1,000/ton, and RMB 2,000/ton, respectively.

According to CTIA GROUP, the main reasons for this round of price increases are: first, after the May Day holiday, many steel enterprises were willing to replenish inventory. Coupled with rising steel tender prices, this further strengthened suppliers’ confidence in raising prices; currently, steel companies’ purchase price for ferromolybdenum is about RMB 298,000/ton. Second, the recent continuous warming of the international molybdenum market has strongly driven domestic molybdenum prices; the current international molybdenum oxide price is about USD 29.0/pound Mo, and the European ferromolybdenum price is about USD 66.5/kilogram Mo. Third, due to the May Day short holiday, relatively more rainy weather, and high energy prices, some molybdenum manufacturers have slightly reduced output. Coupled with market participants’ high expectations for future prices, the molybdenum market shows a pattern of easy increase but difficult decline.

Regarding news, according to the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), in the first quarter, the added value of the machinery industry maintained growth, and the output of most products increased year-on-year. Among them, excavator output increased by 22.8% year-on-year, metal-cutting machine tool output increased by 3.4%, large tractor output increased by 8.0% year-on-year, and cement-specific equipment output increased by 31.3%. The export of electromechanical products totaled RMB 4,341 billion, increased by 18.3% year-on-year, accounting for 63.4% of total exports, with cumulative export volumes of most products increasing year-on-year. In March, the output of major machinery industry products varied year-on-year: industrial robots, excavators, large tractors, cement-specific equipment, metal forming machine tools, and metal-cutting machine tools increased; the output of metal smelting equipment decreased.
