Molybdenum market update on May 7, 2026

The domestic molybdenum price has generally shown a slight increase at a high level, with the prices of ferromolybdenum and ammonium tetrathiomolybdate both increased by around RMB 1,000/ton. However, under this market condition, trading sentiment is moderate and transactions are limited.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, the overall sentiment of holding back for higher prices is relatively strong, mainly due to the increased enthusiasm for inquiries and purchases from downstream after the May Day holiday and the steady rise of international molybdenum prices recently. Recently, a certain mine in Yunnan sold 160 tons of 40-45% molybdenum concentrate at a selling price of RMB 4,740/ton-degree.

In the ferromolybdenum market, the trading atmosphere is active. After the May Day holiday, steel companies concentrated on bidding for ferromolybdenum, and the bidding prices were acceptable, which greatly strengthened the confidence of intermediate smelting enterprises to raise prices. Recently, steel companies participating in ferromolybdenum bidding include Baosteel Baoshan, Fushun Special Steel, Qingshan Holding Group, Hebei Steel, Zhongnan Steel, Hengyang Hualing Steel Pipe, and Shanxi Taigang.

In the molybdenum chemical and its products market, the market is stable. With end customers basically maintaining rigid demand and suppliers showing weak willingness to lower prices for sales, product price changes are mainly influenced by upstream raw material trends.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) show that in late April 2026, the social inventory of five major steel products in 21 cities reached 10.22 million tons, a decrease of 380,000 tons month-on-month, decreased by 3.6%, with inventory continuing to decline; compared with the beginning of the year, it increased by 3.01 million tons, increased by 41.7%; compared with the same period last year, it increased by 1.37 million tons, increased by 15.5%. During the same period, except for a slight increase in medium and thick plates, the social inventories of the five major steel products decreased month-on-month, with rebar being the product with the largest decrease and wire rod having the largest decline; year-on-year, the inventories of all five major products increased to varying degrees, with rebar having the largest increase in volume and medium and thick plates having the largest growth rate.
