Molybdenum market update on May 9, 2026

In the first week after the May Day holiday, domestic molybdenum prices showed an overall steady increase, mainly due to steel enterprises concentrating on bidding for ferromolybdenum, rising steel tender prices, favorable international molybdenum market conditions, and strong sellers’ sentiment to hold stock and expect higher prices.

After the holiday, the main reason for steel enterprises raising ferromolybdenum procurement quotations was the recent continuous rise in steel prices and the weak willingness of ferromolybdenum manufacturers to sell at low prices. Today, the steel tender price is about RMB 305,000/ton, and the international molybdenum oxide price is about USD 29.2/pound of molybdenum.

According to CTIA GROUP statistics, this week molybdenum concentrate increased by RMB 60/ton-degree, an increase of 1.26%; ferromolybdenum increased by RMB 7,000/ton, an increase of 2.33%; molybdenum oxide increased by RMB 60/ton-degree, an increase of 1.23%; sodium molybdate increased by RMB 6,000/ton, an increase of 2.86%; ammonium tetramolybdate increased by RMB 7,000/ton, an increase of 2.41%; ammonium heptamolybdate increased by RMB 7,000/ton, an increase of 2.38%; molybdenum powder increased by RMB 10/kg, an increase of 1.80%; molybdenum rods increased by RMB 10/kg, an increase of 1.79%.

Regarding news, in the first quarter, China produced 7.04 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 6.9%. Among them, passenger vehicle production was 5.91 million, a year-on-year decrease of 9.3%; commercial vehicle production was 1.13 million, a year-on-year increase of 7.9%. New energy vehicle production slightly declined, down 6.8% year-on-year, with sales accounting for 42% of the total. Exported vehicles reached 2.23 million, a year-on-year increase of 56.7%.

In March, China’s vehicle production was 2.92 million, a year-on-year decrease of 3.0% but a month-on-month increase of 74.4%. Passenger vehicle production decreased both year-on-year and month-on-month, while commercial vehicle production increased both year-on-year and month-on-month. Exported vehicles reached 880,000, a year-on-year increase of 72.7%, with a faster growth rate compared to February.
