Molybdenum market update on March 19, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market continues to maintain a strong performance overall. Under the influence of multiple factors, the price negotiation between buyers and sellers has become more apparent, with limited actual transaction volume. Today, the price of molybdenum iron decreased by approximately RMB 1,000 per ton.

From a positive perspective, firstly, steel enterprises are gradually entering the market for bidding on molybdenum iron, which has significantly supported suppliers' confidence in maintaining firm prices. Secondly, due to factors such as high energy prices, stricter environmental policies, and declining ore grades, some molybdenum mining companies have reduced production capacity, which further helps stabilize suppliers' confidence in their pricing.

On the negative side, first, steel companies' continued pressure on molybdenum iron procurement prices has restrained the upward price potential of other molybdenum products. Secondly, the decline in international molybdenum oxide and European molybdenum iron prices has exerted some pressure on the domestic molybdenum market. Today, steel bidding prices are generally below RMB 280,000 per ton.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) shows that in early March 2026, the steel inventory of key steel enterprises was 17.81 million tons, an increase of 2.7% compared to the previous period, a 26.0% increase compared to the beginning of the year, a 17.9% increase compared to the same period last month, a 9.7% increase compared to the same period last year, and an 8.8% decrease compared to the same period two years ago. Regionally, steel inventories in Northeast China increased by 230,000 tons, in East China by 50,000 tons, in Northwest China remained mostly stable, in Southwest China increased by 160,000 tons, in Central and South China increased by 300,000 tons, and in North China decreased by 270,000 tons.
