Molybdenum market update on March 20, 2026

This week, the domestic molybdenum market remained generally stable, as reflected by minor price changes for most products and a moderate increase in actual transactions. At present, the focus of industry participants is on the shipment situation of molybdenum mining companies.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, the overall situation was at a standstill. With a decent level of purchasing interest from downstream sectors and tighter supply of spot molybdenum concentrate, stockholders' prices were generally firm. Recently, the transaction price of molybdenum concentrate was around RMB 4,430 per ton-degree.

In the molybdenum ferroalloy market, there was an active buying and selling atmosphere. Although steel procurement prices were relatively low and low-priced sources were difficult to find, making it hard for intermediate smelting companies to adjust their prices, steel companies had a strong willingness to purchase, and the market transaction volume increased.

In the molybdenum chemical and its products market, the market sentiment was largely cautious due to price negotiations on raw materials and a weak international molybdenum market. Today, the prices of sodium molybdate and molybdenum powder were approximately RMB 202,000 per ton and RMB 533 per kilogram, respectively.

In terms of news, data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in January and February 2026, China's crude steel production was 160.34 million tons, a decrease of 3.6% year-on-year; the daily average production of crude steel was 2.718 million tons, an increase of 23.6% compared to the previous month. Pig iron production was 137.7 million tons, a decrease of 2.7% year-on-year; the daily average production of pig iron was 2.334 million tons, an increase of 19.1% compared to the previous month. Steel production was 221.19 million tons, a decrease of 1.1% year-on-year; the daily average production of steel was 3.749 million tons, an increase of 0.8% compared to the previous month. By industry, in January and February, among 41 major industries, 35 industries had an increase in value added year-on-year; among them, the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry grew by 2.2%.
