Molybdenum market update on March 17, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market is generally in a sideways consolidation phase, mainly due to the average trading sentiment and the limited impact of international molybdenum market trends on the domestic market.

Currently, market participants are mainly focused on the performance of the steel bidding quantity and price. Recently, steel enterprises bidding for molybdenum iron include Hengyang Hualing Steel Pipe, Fushun Special Steel, Maanshan Steel, Ansteel Rolls, Dalian Special Steel, Baosteel (Baoshan), Shandong Steel, Northeast Special Steel, and others. The bidding price is around RMB 280,000 per ton.

According to CTIA GROUP LTD, the current high energy prices, the prominent position of strategic metal resources, and the rigid demand from downstream users are supporting suppliers' confidence in maintaining strong quotes. However, influenced by the complex and volatile global economic situation and the weak increase in steel prices, steel enterprises are under strong pressure to reduce the procurement price of molybdenum iron, which in turn makes it difficult for other molybdenum product prices to rise.

In terms of news, according to data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), in early March 2026, key steel enterprises produced 20.11 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily production of 2.011 million tons, a decrease of 0.8% compared to the previous month. Regionally, the daily crude steel production decreased by 10,000 tons in Northeast China, 9,000 tons in North China, 21,000 tons in East China, and 2,000 tons in Central and South China. Meanwhile, daily crude steel production increased by 6,000 tons in Northwest China and 20,000 tons in Southwest China.
