Molybdenum market update on March 16, 2026

On Monday, the domestic molybdenum price showed a standoff pattern, with no significant fluctuations in product prices due to the low willingness of suppliers to lower prices for shipments and strong price pressure from buyers.

The actual transaction volume was limited. Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium heptamolybdate are approximately RMB 4,430/ton-degree, RMB 284,000/ton, and RMB 283,000/ton, respectively. According to CTIA ONLINE, the recent rise in energy prices has led to an increase in production costs for molybdenum manufacturers and reduced profit margins. Additionally, downstream users are generally maintaining demand-driven procurement, making price reductions less likely. However, influenced by the lower bids from steelmakers for ferromolybdenum, the product prices also lack upward momentum.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in early March 2026, the social inventory of five major steel products in 21 cities reached 11.64 million tons, an increase of 760,000 tons, rising by 7.0%. The increase in inventory slightly narrowed compared to the previous period. Compared to the beginning of the year, the inventory increased by 4.43 million tons, up by 61.4%. Compared to the same period last year, the inventory increased by 420,000 tons, up by 3.7%. By region, except for a slight decrease in the northeast, all other regions showed varying degrees of increase. Among these, East China saw the largest increment and growth rate.
