Using ICP-AES Method to Measure Ti and Zr Content on TZM Alloy

TZM alloy has high melting point, high corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties and other advantages so TZM alloy application is the widest in all molybdenum alloy. Besides Ti and Zr content will occurs big influences on TZM alloy’s properties. So to set up accurate reliable analytical method to measure TZM alloy’s Zr and Ti content is necessary. At the present, there are a lot of method to measure TZM alloy’s Zr and Ti. At this article we will introduce using inductively coupled plasma - atomic spectrometry (ICP-AES) method to measure alloy’s Ti and Zr content. This method not only simple, fast, high accuracy, but also can meet the routine check requirement. On the other hand, ICP-AES method has high sensitivity, high accuracy and has wide work linear range and other advantages so the application of it become more and more widely.
Reagents requirements:
Ti and Zr standard solution: using spectrum oxide to produce stock solution that every element solubility is 1g·L-1 and then dilute the solution to required solubility. Molybdenum powder (mass fraction≥99.95% ), nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, ammonium sulfate and all reagent is analytically pure. The experiment water is second deionized water.
Equipment operation requirement:
Radio-frequency powder: 1.1kW; Cooling gas flow:20L·min-1; Atomizer pressure: 36.54MPa; Assistant gas flow: 0.2L·min-1; solution lifting capacity; integral time:10s; observation ways: vertical.
Experiment method:
weighting 0.2 sample put it into 100ml beaker and then adding 2ml sulfuric acid and 1g ammonium sulfate into it. Then put the beaker at electric hot plate to heat and after the sample dissolved and cooling put it into 100ml volumetric flask and using water to dilute the solution to scale. Finally, it can use for measure.
Using ICP-AES method to measure Ti and Zr content in TZM alloy not only avoid complex process of conventional method of chemical methods and decrease measure time significantly. But also Ti and Zr element can measure at the same time. What’s more, it has fast, flexible, convenient and other characteristic which can save a lot of manpower, reagents waste and improve measure efficiency.
