Titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) alloys has special physical and chemical properties, so when welding must consider the impact of their properties on the welding performance.
Titanium zirconium molybdenum is stable at room temperature, but at temperatures above 520 ℃ will start slow oxidation, and with the rate of temperature increase will accelerate oxidation. So during welding should pay attention to oxidation protection. That is welding should in vacuum or employ in inert gas atmosphere for protection.
The study found that, the brittle of TZM alloy has great relevant with O, N content, and O is the main reason causing brittle of molybdenum alloy, which is concentrated in the grain boundary by making the grain boundary embrittlement. Meanwhile, the gas element content can easily cause weld porosity. Thus, in the preparation of TZM alloy, it should take a special process to make O, N elements and low-melting impurities minimized.
Last but no least, since the welding temperature is generally too high, so the grains of TZM alloy easily grow. At the same time, during welding there is high temperature at solder region and it will produce heat stress during, leading to a further deepening of defects. Therefore, when welding need to heat treatment before welding and after welding.
