Carbon Content Influence C/TZM Composite Material’s Impact Toughness

Adding carbon fiber, there are fine grains in C/TZM composite material, but with the carbon fiber content increasing, its mechanical properties are presented interval changes. That is, with the carbon fiber volume fraction increased the impact toughness hardness and tensile strength of C/TZM composites occur interval changes.
The study found that the impact toughness of the composite material is higher than the fiber- free TZM alloy. But with the increase of carbon fiber volume fraction, the impact toughness of the composite increases first and then decrease. When the carbon fiber volume fraction is 2%, impact toughness of the composite is max which is higher 2.5 times than the TZM alloy. However, when the carbon fiber volume fraction is greater than 2%, with the increase of carbon fiber volume fraction, the impact toughness of the composite material is reduced. When carbon fiber volume fraction is 8% and the impact toughness of the composite is min.
Mainly because when the carbon fiber at 2% the combination between TZM substrate and carbon fiber is the best. Too much carbon fiber content can not be well warp by substrate so the impact toughness decreases. Meanwhile, the carbon fiber volume fraction is too large is not conducive to the composite molding process.
