Carbon Content Influence C/TZM Composite Material’s Mechanical Property

The study showed that with carbon fiber content increasing, the mechanical property of C/TZM composite occur interval changes. The composite material’s mechanical properties is higher than the fiber-free TZM alloy, with carbon fibers volume fraction increasing, mechanical property of the composite first increase then decrease.
There are two main reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly, during composite material producing, there are a strong combination between the carbon fiber and the TZM matrix.  If the bond between the carbon fiber and the matrix is very good, it means that carbon fiber is completely warp by matrix, the properties of the material will increase. Conversely, if the carbon fiber volume fraction is too large, it can not be completely wrapped by matrix, so it will easy form agglomerates, which tends to decrease performance composites.
The second reason is that when there is too much carbon fiber content it is hart to machine-shaping by powder metallurgy method. So the combination between carbon fiber and TZM matrix becomes weaker and there will have some cracks during press process so that reduces C/TZM composite materials’s performance.
