High temperature oxidation resistance of titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) alloy is very poor. At present to improve its high-temperature oxidation resistance methods have alloying and coating and wherein coating on surface applied more widely. Intermetallic compound MoSi2 protective film can produce dense layer of SiO2 at high temperatures and have excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance. So it is considered the most suitable coating material for engineering use at high-temperature, also known as the preferred material of antioxidant coating for TZM alloy surface.
MoSi2 is an intermediate phase which has highest silicon containing in Mo-Si binary alloy. Because the Mo atoms and Si atoms has similar radius and the electronegativity of them are relatively close, so it has the dual characteristics of metal and ceramic, mainly for: high melting point, moderate density, good electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. Besides, it has excellent stability at high temperature and high temperature oxidation resistance. The antioxidation temperature of it can reach 1700 ℃. What’s more MoSi2 at 1650℃ can withstand oxidation more than 2000 hours.
