Titanium Zirconium Molybdenum Alloy Silicide Coating

Titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) alloy has poor oxidation resistance. When the temperature below 400℃, TZM alloy oxidation rate is very slow and the surface will generate less volatile MoO2. when temperature at 400 ~ 650℃, oxidation increase of the alloy will rapidly increase, forming volatile MoO3. When the temperature is higher than 650 ℃, due to MoO3 is easily volatile so material mass loss increased dramatically. The coating method can improve TZM alloy‘s oxidation resistance and the coating methods have aluminide coating and tungsten silicide coating. Here will introduce silicide coating.
The researchers used plasma spray method spray silicon powder on TZM alloy substrate surface and sintering in an argon atmosphere at 1350 ℃. Final TZM alloy surface will form a two-phase structure. That is the inner layer is Mo5Si3 and the thickness is about 10um. The outer layer is MoSi2 and the thickness is about 150um. Wherein the outer layer of MoSi2 will be generated SiO2 film on coating surface when the temperature is above 1000 ℃ to prevent oxygen entering the substrate of alloy, which effectively prevent the quality loss of TZM alloy resulting from high temperature oxidation.
