Molybdenum History

In 1778, molybdenite was first discovered by the chemist C.W Hill and uses it to create a molybdic acid and molybdenum oxide. But the element is recognized by Carl • William • Scheler that is distinct from other metals. And it is separated in 1778 by Peter • Jacob• Hjelm. In 1782, another Swedish chemist PJ Jerome burning mixture of charcoal and molybdenum in closed containers to obtain molybdenum metal powder for first time.
Because the appearance of molybdenite like lead, so in 18th it is often considered to lead, molybdenum it comes from New Latin molybdaenum, while molybdaenum from ancient Greek molybdos, meaning lead.
Until 1893, M • Maurison melting mixture of carbon and molybdenum trioxide in the electrical protection, the first time obtain cast metal which contain Mo 92%~96%. In 1894 French first added molybdenum into steel alloy to improve the strength of steel armor. During 1909~1910, WD Kulez first proposed using metallurgy powder method to produce molybdenum. This process until 1946, it was only used for industrial production, become a routine means of molybdenum metal smelting.
During World War II, using vacuum melting to produce 450~1000kg large molybdenum blanks. Although discovered molybdenum has 200 years of history, but the development and use of molybdenum is in this century.
