Molybdenum is a kind of rare metal with strategic significance, which has feature of high melting point, high strength and high hardness as a structural material. However, due to the defects of low recrystallization temperature, brittleness and low intensity of room temperature, the use range of TZM alloy ( Ti-Zr-Mo alloy) has been limited. Alloying is one of the important ways to improve its performance, thus developed a variety of molybdenum alloy, such as TZM/MHC/TZC etc. TZM alloy has so many advantages that become the most widely used molybdenum alloy at present.
There are mainly two methods to produce TZM alloy, including vacuum arc melting and powder metallurgy.
Vacuum smelting method: Adding a certain amount of Ti, Zr, etc. into molybdenum by mass fraction, then TZM alloy is obtained by arc melting method. This method has the disadvantage of long production process, complex process, more equipment and consumption, low yield and highcost, therefore people donot take this method.
Powder metallurgy means that mixing high molybdenum powder with TiH2 powder, ZrH2 powder and carbon black powder spray, then isostatic pressing after colding, and sintering in high temperature (1900-2100℃) under protective atmosphere , getting TZM blank. After high temperature hot rolling forging (high temperature), 1253-1350℃, 600-750℃ in hot rolling (medium temperature forging), 200-300℃ cold rolling (cold forging), the final results of the stress relieving TZM finished product.
Powder metallurgy method, saving the electricity arc furnace, vacuum extrusion machine and corresponding high temperature furnace and other large equipment, the process simplified, shorten production cycle, reduce consumption, production capacity and the yield is improved, which greatly reduce the cost.
