Sapphire Ingot/Substrate Industry Report

It was with the growth of the LED market that sapphire substrates, which were traditionally used in watch cover, front cover in high-end mobile devices, and industrial windows, have seen a great leap in demand. When the growth seemed limited, Apple employed sapphire for the iSight camera lens cover of its iPhone 5 in 2012, boosting the market again. Apple has used the employment of sapphire crystal lens cover in its product marketing, and this helped general customers to recognize sapphire as an industrial material not just a gem stone. As demand from mobile-use small covers is expected to rise, the sapphire ingot market will grow 2.7 times by 2016 from 2012 by unit.

Still, the biggest demand for sapphire ingots and substrates comes from the LED market. As of the first half of 2013, demand for LED sapphire substrates accounts for more than 90% of the total demand for sapphire. With the LED lighting market expected to grow, the demand for LED sapphire substrates will likely continue to increase.Along with Apple, which uses sapphire crystal for its camera lens cover and home button of the iPhone 5S, LG Electronics applies the material to the camera lens cover of the Optimus G2. IHS forecasts that the materials’ application will expand to other mobile devices, and the small cover market has a great potential to grow. Beginning 2014, demand from the market will surge and make up more than 20% of the total sapphire ingot demand by 2016. The new market provides a fresh momentum for the sapphire ingot/substrate industry, which had heavily depended on the LED market. It will help ease the oversupply of the sapphire ingot/substrate market and significantly contribute to its growth in volume.
