Engineer designs engagement ring that lights up

San Francisco engineer Ben Kokes, 36, spent five months designing the ring that is made of out titanium and embedded with an LED light and copper coil under the stones.

Mr Kokes created an armband that contains an alternating magnetic field so that when he is nearby, the stones in the ring are illuminated.

Mr Kokes told NBC that he put the armband on and took his girlfriend, Julie Nicolai, hiking to propose to her.

Much to her surprise, the ring lit up when he moved his hand close enough to activate it.

He wrote on his blog that he had planned to take his fiancée to pick out a traditional ring the next day but she liked the LED ring so much that she asked him to make her a more permanent version. (By ninemsn)
