New York puts LED lights on Thruway expected to save 20% on light bill

The addition of LED lights along the New York State Thruway and Canal system expected to cut electric costs by 20%, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced in April 23. In addition, the lighting system upgrades also can improve the lighting environment, and increase safety factor.

At present, the lighting system's yearly electric bill is about $2 million. It will save electricity 20% each year after the upgrade. Thruway Authority will receive a number of incentives and rebates to install LED lighting, the installation costs can be offset by the savings in electricity approximately in two years.

New York also plans to install the new lights at toll barriers, plazas and parking lot nearby, and start solar and wind power projects in nearly 300 locations, powered to the freeway.
