Molybdenum market update on September 21, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market as a whole maintained a high-level sideways operation.

Under the interplay of multiple bullish and bearish factors, price negotiations between buyers and sellers were intense, actual transaction volume growth was moderate, and industry participants were relatively cautious in their expectations for the future market. Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum were approximately RMB 5,490/ton-degree and RMB 345,000/ton, respectively.

From the perspective of bullish factors, first, continuously tight spot supply of raw materials, coupled with strong production cost support, has strengthened suppliers' awareness of raising prices; second, against the background of relatively high ferromolybdenum prices, steel enterprises have successively entered tenders for ferromolybdenum, which has largely boosted market confidence in supporting prices; third, the recent volatile rise in international molybdenum prices has provided positive momentum to the domestic molybdenum market.

From the perspective of bearish factors, first, the current relatively high price of molybdenum concentrate and strong price-cutting sentiment among downstream users have made it difficult for intermediate smelting enterprises to quote; second, limited downstream demand increments have constrained the upside room for molybdenum prices.

In terms of news, according to monitoring by the China Iron and Steel Association, in August 2026, the average value of the China Steel Price Index (CSPI) was 91.10 points, decreased by 0.71% month-on-month and decreased by 3.92% year-on-year. Among them, the average value of the CSPI long product index was 91.58 points, decreased by 1.09% month-on-month and decreased by 4.77% year-on-year; the average value of the plate index was 90.15 points, decreased by 0.49% month-on-month and decreased by 3.69% year-on-year. As of the end of August 2026, the CSPI was 92.10 points, increased by 1.13% month-on-month, increased by 0.25% from the end of the previous year, and decreased by 2.04% year-on-year.
