Molybdenum market update on May 27, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market generally showed a weak trend. Under the intertwining influence of favorable and unfavorable factors, both buyers and sellers showed average enthusiasm for market entry operations, mainly adopting a wait-and-see attitude, with relatively few new orders.

Under such market conditions, most industry insiders remain relatively cautious about the future market outlook.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, the transaction price of products stood at around RMB 4,950/ton-degree. Affected by factors such as the significant decline in molybdenum concentrate prices recently and the increased enthusiasm of some consumers for low-price procurement, many suppliers have strengthened their reluctance to sell and intention to hold prices firm. However, a small number of holders still chose to sell at discounted prices due to capital pressure.

In the ferromolybdenum market, trading activity in the market was relatively subdued. Affected by the obvious market sentiment of “buying on rises rather than declines” and the weak performance of the steel market, downstream procurement pace slowed down, resulting in limited spot transactions. As of now, the total volume of ferromolybdenum steel tenders in May exceeded 12,000 tons.

In the molybdenum chemical and products market, quotations for mainstream products generally remained stable, with both upstream and downstream participants mainly conducting procurement and sales based on rigid demand, and no obvious upward or downward trend for the time being. Today, the prices of sodium molybdate and ammonium heptamolybdate were about RMB 222,000/ton and RMB 309,000/ton respectively.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association showed that in mid-May 2026, key steel enterprises produced a total of 20.96 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily output of 2.096 million tons, decreased by 0.7% month-on-month. By region, the average daily crude steel output in North China decreased by 19,000 tons, Southwest China decreased by 11,000 tons, Northeast China increased by 1,000 tons, East China increased by 15,000 tons, while Northwest China and Central-South China remained basically flat compared with the previous ten-day period.
