Molybdenum market update on March 27, 2026

This week, the domestic molybdenum market showed a generally stable but slightly weaker trend. 

The price of molybdenum concentrate decreased by RMB 30 per ton-degree, a decline of 0.68%; the price of ferromolybdenum decreased by RMB 3,000 per ton, a decline of 1.06%; the price of molybdenum oxide decreased by RMB 30 per ton-degree, a decline of 0.66%. Although the prices of molybdenum raw materials decreased, the prices of molybdenum chemical products and molybdenum products remained firm. This phenomenon reflects a certain lag in the price changes of molybdenum chemicals and molybdenum products.

According to CTIA GROUP LTD, the reasons for the decline in molybdenum raw material prices are mainly: first, the steel tender price is relatively low, around RMB 277,000 per ton, which greatly weakens the confidence of ferromolybdenum producers in maintaining prices; second, due to weak expectations for the future market and the relatively favorable current prices of molybdenum products, molybdenum mining companies have become more willing to lower prices and sell. Recently, a mine in Jiangxi sold 160 tons of molybdenum concentrate with a grade of 35-40% at a transaction price of RMB 4,370 per ton-degree. However, due to high energy prices and multiple steel companies raising their prices, the probability of a significant drop in molybdenum product prices is low.

In terms of news, data from the World Steel Association shows that in February 2026, China's estimated crude steel production was 76.09 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 3.6%; India's crude steel production was 13.60 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.7%; the United States' crude steel production was 6.50 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%; Japan's crude steel production was 6.40 million tons, the same as in February 2025; Russia's estimated crude steel production was 5.00 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 10.2%; South Korea's crude steel production was 4.80 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 0.2%; Turkey's crude steel production was 3.00 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%; Germany's crude steel production was 2.80 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%; Brazil's crude steel production was 2.50 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.7%; and Iran's estimated crude steel production was 1.70 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%.
