Why Does a Plant Need Molybdenum?

Function

Plants use molybdenum to help enzymes convert nitrates into amino acids and to level nitrogen content. Without enough molybdenum, plants become nitrogen-deficient.

Effects
When plants lack molybdenum, leaves turn greenish-yellow to yellow and may begin to curl, wither, roll and crinkle. Stunted growth leads to underdeveloped leaf blades, loss of vigor, wilting and other defects. Plants can die in severe cases of molybdenum deficiency.

Significance
Humans also need molybdenum and plants serve as an important source of the trace mineral. Soil conditions and other environmental factors can affect the molybdenum content in the plants that are primary human sources of the mineral, including legumes and grains.
