Identification
Molybdenum is vital for plants, but they only need minuscule amounts. According to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, plants need less than one part per million (ppm) of molybdenum. Most soils contain 0.25 to 5.0 ppm, so molybdenum deficiencies are rare. Soils higher in organic matter generally have higher molybdenum levels.
Considerations
When molybdenum deficiencies do occur, it's typically in acidic, sandy soils or soils that have been extensively weathered. Plants use molybdenum as an enzyme cofactor to help metabolize nitrates they take up from the soil, so the deficiency symptoms are similar to those of a nitrogen deficiency. If molybdenum deficiency is a problem, increasing the soil's pH can often correct it. If this fails, however, fertilizers like ammonium molybdate can boost molybdenum levels.
Warning
Molybdenum deficiency is rare, and applying excess molybdenum can be detrimental to the plants and animals that consume it. Consequently, it's best to investigate other possible deficiencies before checking for a lack of molybdenum in your soil. Add some molybdenum to a test plot and watch for a response to aid your diagnosis.
