Applications of Molybdenum and Molybdenum Alloy

Applications of molybdenum and molybdenum alloy are as followings:

From the global consumption structure, molybdenum really can be  called the ally of iron. 80% of the demand for molybdenum in western developed countries comes from iron and steel. As for this proportion,  stainless steel absorbs 30% of molybdenum, low-alloy steel absorbs 30% of molybdenum, drilling bit tools and cutting tools use 10% of molybdenum, cast steel applies 10% of molybdenum. Another 20% of  molybdenum is consumed in molybdenum chemical products, molybdenum lubricants, petroleum refining and other fields.

A typical example: in 1998, 75% of molybdenum was consumed in iron and steel production in America. In addition, molybdenum alloy is also widely applied in electronics, metal processing and aerospace industry.

As the ally of steel, molybdenum can be used with nickel, chromium and applied as alloying elements in alloy steel, which can reduce the embrittlement of alloy steel often occurs in the heat treatment. Tungsten can be replaced with molybdenum in producing the high-speed steel, which will solve the problem-insufficient tungsten resources. According to the calculation, the capacity of molybdenum is twice as big as that of tungsten. As a result, steel that contains 18% of tungsten can be replaced with steel that contains 9% of molybdenum (addition of chromium and vanadium), which will greatly reduce the production cost of steel. The function of molybdenum in stainless steel is to improve corrosion resistance, increase the high temperature strength and improve the weldability of stainless steel.
So molybdenum has extraordinary effect in iron and steel industry.
