Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheet Producing Method – Electrochemical

molybdenum disulfide nanosheet producing method - electrochemical picture

Molybdenum disulfide nanosheet can be shorted for MoS2 nanosheet, which is a kind of high performance material. In 2011, Radisavljevic Band Radenovic A from Swiss reported it as the next nano electronic devices material. Its properties will be much higher than the traditional silicone and fullerenes for the single nanosheet can be used to produce smaller but higher efficient electronic chips. Meanwhile, based on its hexagonal crystal structure and high temperature resistance of moly, it is widely used as lubricants, esp. under high temperature, which has been a unique property differing from most greases.

There have been many methods to produce MoS2 nanosheet, mechanical peeling method, the liquid phase, physical vapor deposition, electrochemical, thermal decomposition method, a hydrothermal method, and chemical vapor deposition. Those methods can not produce a nanosheet to meet requirements of big size, high quality, layers precisely controlled, low cost, etc, but mostly only for some of them. And if there will be a method to meet all the properties, the production of nanosheet will be industrialized.

Following will introduce one of the producing methods – Electrochemical. This is a method by applying lithiated electrochemical method on glass to make a single layer nanosheet. Prepared materials are layers MoS2, which is equipped as cathode, and lithium foil anode. MoS2 is lithiated under a lithium battery testing device at set current 0.05mA. After adding lithium ion, washing LixMoS2 by acetone. This step is for removing electrolyte. Next part is peeling molybdenum disulfide nanosheet by ultrasonic wave in water or ethanol.

This method is simple, both the material preparation and process and with high efficiency in producing and time saving, but it is difficult to transfer to other substrates. Meanwhile, its semiconductor property is decreasing by the lithiated process and it is not a good method for large quantity nanosheet production. Therefore, it is only applied as a lab testing method only now.
