It is easy to form crack when using smelting-extrusion-forging method to produce TZM alloy. To analysis the crack reason of TZM alloy can improve TZM alloy’s quality. After observing alloy’s surface found the crack mainly in the top of alloy, in the end of alloy or on the circumference surface. As below we will introduce the crack reason at the end of TZM alloy.At the end of alloy the crack shown radial pattern from the central to the edge.
1) On one hand the maximum temperature of furnace is only 1500℃. On the other hand, the alloy blank’s heating temperature is low and the action of release the products is slow which due to the temperature descend range is bigger.
2) The steel layer absorption of heat will cause temperature decease.
3) At 1300℃-1400℃, there is TZM alloy’s brittle zone and will separate out second phase to cause grain boundary embrittlement. When apply the extrusion will along the dendrite to form crack and to extent.
4) The extrusion head has taper angle and the center of angle will first touch the blank, so the crack shown radial pattern from the center line to the surface and extension.
5) The depth of crack is related to the length of extrusion time, the long extrusion time the depth of crack is bigger.
