Bioaccessibility of Micron-Sized Powder Particles of Molybdenum Metal, Molybdenum Oxides and Ferromolybdenum

Provide scientific knowledge of relevance for risk assessment of metals and alloys and highlight the importance of the surface oxide for metal release (bioaccessibility). Conclusions: Alloys cannot be treated as simple mixtures of metals by REACH. Neither for passive alloys such as stainless steel and ferrochromium alloys, nor for alloys such as ferromolybdenum (FeMo) that are releasing similar total amounts of metals compared with their corresponding pure metals. The release of Mo is strongly pH-dependent and increases with increasing pH. Particles of FeMo have a mixed surface oxide (Fe(III)/Mo(VI)) of higher corrosion resistance that as a consequence results in lower amounts of released metals in solutions of low and high pH. Solution composition, metal complexation and precipitation strongly influence the extent of released Mo.
