Rapid Determination of Silicon in Ferromolybdenum Alloy with Molybdenum Blue by Spectrophotometry

The ferromolybdenum alloy was dissolved by proper method, and silicon in it was transformed into silicic acid. On definited acidity condition, the ammonium dimolybdate was put into and reacted with silicic acid, then silicon molybdenum yellow was formed, oxalic acid-ammonium ferrous sulfate was used to reduce silicon molybdenum yellow into molybdenum blue. Silicon was determined by spectrophotometry. The method can be used to determine silicon below 5% in the ferromolybdenum alloy. The determination results of the method were consistent with those of gravimetric method, the relative standard deviation was 0.43%(n=4).

Silicic acid is a chemical compound. It is a silanol. Silicic acid is the general name for a family of chemical compounds containing the element silicon attached to oxide and hydroxyl groups. This family of compounds have the general formula [SiOx(OH)4-2x]n.. Some simple silicic acids have been identified, but only in very dilute aqueous solution, such as metasilicic acid (H2SiO3), orthosilicic acid (H4SiO4, pKa1=9.84, pKa2=13.2 at 25 °C), disilicic acid (H2Si2O5), and pyrosilicic acid (H6Si2O7); however in the solid state these probably condense to form polymeric silicic acids of complex structure.
