Carbon Content Influence C/TZM Composite Material’s Density

Under argon sintering atmosphere and 1800 ℃sintering temperature to produce C/TZM composite materials which has different short carbon fiber content. Short carbon fiber volume fractions are: 2%, 5% and 8%, labeled TZMC1 (2%), TZMC2 (5%) and TZMC1 (8%).
The study found that when the carbon fiber added is less than 2% and the density change of C/TZM composite is small. When the carbon fiber added is more than 2%, with the increasing amount of carbon fiber adding, the density of the composite decreased significantly. This is because adding much carbon fiber can cause partly segregation, voids and other defects when during compaction. On the other hand due to the increasing volume fraction of the carbon fiber, carbon fiber dispersion becomes difficult and carbon fiber reunite is increased, thereby reducing the rate of sintering and pore difficult to remove. Densification resistance becomes large, thus resulting in decreased density of the composite material.
When the carbon fiber volume fraction is small and the defects of composites are rarely, so fiber reunion and the density of the composite material are not obvious. On the contrary, when the volume fraction of composites is increased the density of the composite decline is obvious.
