Using powder metallurgy method to produce carbon fiber reinforced titanium zirconium molybdenum alloy matrix composites(C/TZM composites) has four main production processes: mixing, adding molding agent, pressed shape and sintering. In these production processes the sintered atmosphere will have a greater impact on carbon fibers and the properties of the TZM alloy.
Using powder metallurgy method to produce TZM alloy often selected reducing gas hydrogen as protective gas at high temperature sintering process. However, for the C/TZM composites production adds hydrogen as protective gases will complex chemical reactions of the process. Because adding hydrogen as protective gas will make the mechanical properties of carbon fiber decreases, thereby enhancing role of it to TZM alloy will be greatly reduced. What’s more, it will even affect the mechanical properties of the alloy TZM. So in order to protect the mechanical properties of carbon fiber and ensuring to produce excellent performance C/TZM composites can use inert gas argon as a protective gas during high temperature sintering.
