Apple iPad Mini 2 displays to be produced by Sharp, AUO and LG

Amidst talk of the iPhone 5S, a second more affordable iPhone and iOS 7, WWDC 2013 may also serve as the launchpad for Apple’s latest pint-sized tablet - the iPad Mini 2.

The current offering features a 7.9-inch LCD panel with a 1024x768 resolution, but word has this that its successor will break the Retina Display barrier.

Talk of the next generation iPad Mini’s display has appeared on DigiTimes, who are reporting that three companies have been tasked with manufacturing a new higher resolution screen for the next tablet.

Taiwanese manufacturer AU Optronics has been largely responsible for the majority of the displays currently in use by the existing iPad Mini and although Apple are looking to considerably reduce their orders for this current batch, the manufacturer has already submitted samples for the higher resolution replacement, currently under consideration by Apple.

Alongside AUO, Japanese and Korean companies Sharp and LG are also apparently in play, allegedly making similar displays for the next iPad Mini. The resolution of the new panel in question hasn’t been locked down, but murmurs hint at a 7.9-inch screen with a staggering 2048x1536 resolution, certainly pushing it to within the realms of what Apple qualifies as Retina standard (FYI that would mean a pixel density of an impressive 324ppi).

Alongside a higher resolution screen, the iPad Mini 2 is expected to feature a smaller bezel faster Apple A6X processor and iOS 7 out of the box. The first potential glimpse of this new tablet will be at Apple’s WWDC on June 10th, but we’re not making any promises. (By Recombu)
