Molybdenum market update on August 17, 2026

On Monday, the overall domestic molybdenum market maintained a sideways operation. Under a relatively balanced supply-demand relationship, traders had moderate enthusiasm for entering the market, product prices showed no significant fluctuations for the time being, and spot transaction pace was slow.

Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium heptamolybdate were approximately RMB 5,400/ton-degree, RMB 341,000/ton, and RMB 330,000/ton, respectively.

According to CTIA GROUP, factors such as stable downstream demand, tight raw material supply, and strong production cost support are all sources of motivation for suppliers to maintain firm quotations. Recently, steel enterprises that have entered procurement for ferromolybdenum include Xinyu Iron and Steel, Dalian Special Steel, Angang Lianzhong, Gansu Jiu Steel, Baowu Egang, Nanjing Iron and Steel, etc., with tender prices around RMB 335,000/ton. However, it should be noted that with the continuous rise of molybdenum product prices, downstream inquiry and purchasing enthusiasm has decreased to some extent.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in early August 2026, the steel product inventory of key monitored steel enterprises was 17.18 million tons, increased by 910,000 tons compared with the previous ten-day period, up 5.6%; increased by 3.04 million tons compared with the beginning of the year, up 21.5%; increased by 410,000 tons compared with the same ten-day period of the previous month, up 2.4%; increased by 2.11 million tons compared with the same ten-day period of last year, up 14.0%; increased by 1.28 million tons compared with the same ten-day period of the year before last, up 8.1%. By region, steel product inventory in Northeast China increased by 320,000 tons, in East China increased by 350,000 tons, in Northwest China increased by 20,000 tons, in Southwest China increased by 40,000 tons, in Central South China increased by 210,000 tons, and in North China decreased by 20,000 tons.
