Molybdenum market update on July 8, 2026

The overall domestic molybdenum market showed a high and strengthening trend, with the prices of ferromolybdenum and ammonium tetramolybdate both increasing by approximately RMB 2,000/ton. Under this market condition, industry participants are generally optimistic about the subsequent market outlook, but there is still considerable room for improvement in market transactions.

On the molybdenum concentrate market, against the background of stable downstream demand and strong willingness among suppliers to reduce prices for shipments, transaction prices were carried out around RMB 5,260/ton-degree. On the ferromolybdenum market, overall operations were under pressure. Steel enterprises successively entered tenders for ferromolybdenum, and low-priced feedstock was difficult to source, which forced some intermediate smelting enterprises to slightly raise their offers to avoid the risk of cost-revenue inversion. On the molybdenum chemical and its products market, wait-and-see sentiment was strong, end customers basically maintained rigid demand, and suppliers' quotations were relatively stable.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in May 2026, China exported 1.815 million tons of primary products (steel billets, pig iron, direct reduced iron, and recycled steel raw materials), increased by 10.4% month-on-month; and imported 356,000 tons of primary products, increased by 39.5% month-on-month. From January to May, China's cumulative exports of primary products were 6.767 million tons, increased by 43.0% year-on-year; and cumulative imports of primary products were 1.287 million tons, increased by 68.3% year-on-year.
