Molybdenum market update on April 22, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market has maintained overall stability. Under the influence of both favorable and unfavorable factors, suppliers generally have a strong sentiment to hold off on sales, anticipating price increases, while buyers mostly have rigid demand, resulting in relatively good actual transactions.

Currently, the prices of molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium heptamolybdate are stabilizing around RMB 4,580 per ton-degree, RMB 293,000 per ton, and RMB 284,000 per ton, respectively.

From the favorable factors, first, due to high production costs, continued environmental crackdowns, decreasing ore grades, and the shutdown of some mining enterprises for maintenance, the supply of molybdenum concentrate has limited growth, which provides support for the pricing of stockholders. Second, influenced by recent fluctuations in steel prices, steel enterprises have shown increased enthusiasm in bidding for ferromolybdenum. Third, the slight recovery in the international molybdenum market has provided some external support for the stability of the domestic molybdenum market.

From the unfavorable factors, first, although downstream demand remains stable, downstream users continue to push down prices for molybdenum products, leading to insufficient upward momentum in the domestic molybdenum market. Second, the increase in molybdenum product imports and the decrease in exports in the first quarter have put some pressure on domestic molybdenum prices. From January to March 2026, China’s molybdenum product imports totaled 26,027.13 tons, an increase of 22.23% year-on-year, while exports totaled 7,548.46 tons, a decrease of 20.84% year-on-year.
