Molybdenum market update on April 20, 2026

On Monday, the domestic molybdenum market maintained a high and strong trend overall.

Influenced by the increase in the transaction price of 40%-45% molybdenum concentrate to RMB 4,585/ton-degree (with a transaction volume of 288 tons) at a mine in Jiangxi on April 16, as well as the positive bidding activity from steel enterprises for ferromolybdenum, the prices of mainstream molybdenum products increased. Specifically, the price of molybdenum concentrate increased by approximately RMB 60/ton-degree, ferromolybdenum increased by approximately RMB 3,000/ton, and ammonium molybdate increased by approximately RMB 3,000/ton. Recently, steel mills that have participated in the bidding for ferromolybdenum include Benxi Steel Hengtong, Deyang Second Heavy, Anhui Maanshan Steel, Longteng Special Steel, Juneng Special Steel, and Ma'anshan Iron and Steel, among others. As of now, the total amount of molybdenum iron procured through the April steel tender is approximately 9,000 tons.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) shows that in the first ten days of April 2026, key steel enterprises produced a total of 19.54 million tons of steel, with an average daily output of 1.954 million tons, a decrease of 5.1% from the previous period. Among the six major regions, except for North China and Southwest China, where the daily steel output of key enterprises increased compared to the previous period, other regions saw varying degrees of decline. Specifically: Northeast China’s daily steel output decreased by 41,000 tons, East China’s daily steel output decreased by 12,000 tons, Northwest China’s daily steel output decreased by 11,000 tons, and Central and South China’s daily steel output decreased by 52,000 tons. The daily steel output in North China increased by 9,000 tons, and the daily steel output in Southwest China increased by 2,000 tons.
