Molybdenum market update on April 14, 2026

The domestic molybdenum prices have shown a general decline from their high levels, mainly due to the lack of price hikes from suppliers and the increased caution in downstream terminal consumption. 

Today, the prices of molybdenum concentrates and ferromolybdenum have decreased by approximately RMB 20/ton-degree and RMB 1,000/ton, respectively.

From a positive perspective, first, some steel companies are still willing to purchase ferromolybdenum, which has provided some support to the market. Second, due to production cost support, suppliers generally have limited room for offering discounts. Third, the incremental supply of molybdenum concentrate in the spot market is limited, which has provided support from the supply side. On the negative side, first, molybdenum prices are currently at relatively high levels, and most downstream companies are consuming their own inventory, which has led to a reduction in market inquiries and purchases. Second, the international molybdenum market is relatively flat, which is not favorable for a rise in the domestic molybdenum market.

In terms of news, data from the China Iron and Steel Association shows that in early April 2026, the social inventory of five major steel products in 21 cities reached 10.82 million tons, a decrease of 600,000 tons, or 5.3%, compared to the previous month. Compared to the beginning of the year, it has increased by 3.61 million tons, or 50.1%. Compared to the same period last year, it has increased by 990,000 tons, or 10.1%. By region, in the seven major regions, except for the Southwest, which remained stable, all other regions showed varying degrees of decline, with South China experiencing the largest reduction and Northwest China seeing the largest drop.
