Molybdenum market update on March 25, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market is performing generally underwhelming, with weak supply and demand and no significant industry news released.

As a result, there is intense price negotiation among traders, and new orders are limited. Today, the prices for molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium heptamolybdate are approximately RMB 4,400/ton-degree, RMB 280,000/ton, and RMB 283,000/ton, respectively.

On the positive side, one factor supporting the market is a relatively high willingness to inquire from downstream buyers, which provides suppliers with strong confidence to maintain prices. Recently, steel companies bidding for molybdenum ferromolybdenum include Dongfang Special Steel, Jiangsu Yonggang, Rizhao Steel, and Xinxing Casting Pipe. Another factor is that due to rising energy prices, stricter environmental policies, and the aging of mine grades, the production capacity release of certain molybdenum mining enterprises has slowed, which benefits traders holding inventory and supports their pricing power.

On the negative side, one of the key challenges is that steel mill bidding prices are hard to increase, which puts downward pressure on ferromolybdenum prices and weakens the confidence of molybdenum concentrate suppliers to maintain prices. Furthermore, due to the complex and ever-changing global economic situation, downstream molybdenum production enterprises are adopting a more cautious attitude towards purchasing.

In terms of news, according to the Steel Association’s monitoring, in February 2026, the average China Steel Price Index (CSPI) was 90.73 points, a decrease of 0.90 points from the previous month, a drop of 0.99%; it decreased by 5.27 points year-on-year, a drop of 5.49%. The CSPI long products index averaged 93.12 points, a decrease of 0.95 points month-on-month, a drop of 1.01%; and a decrease of 5.35 points year-on-year, a drop of 5.43%. The flat products index averaged 88.78 points, a decrease of 0.90 points month-on-month, a drop of 1.00%; and a decrease of 5.53 points year-on-year, a drop of 5.86%. As of the end of February 2026, the CSPI was 90.58 points, a decrease of 0.61 points from the previous month, a drop of 0.67%; down 1.29 points from the end of last year, a drop of 1.40%; and decreased by 5.21 points year-on-year, a drop of 5.44%.
