Molybdenum market update on February 4, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market overall maintained a relatively strong operation, mainly reflected in slight price increases for most products and traders basically maintaining rigid demand transactions.

Today, molybdenum concentrate and ferromolybdenum prices increased by approximately RMB 30 per tonne-degree and RMB 1,000/ton respectively.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, affected by steady downstream demand and difficulty in increasing market spot supply, molybdenum mining enterprises held strong reluctance to sell while waiting for higher prices. On February 3, a mine in Yunnan sold 96 tons of 40% molybdenum concentrate at a transaction price of RMB 4,115 per tonne-degree.

In the ferromolybdenum market, the overall trend remained under pressure. Steel tender prices were low (generally below RMB 260,000/ton) and molybdenum concentrate sales prices were difficult to lower, making it hard for intermediate smelters to raise quotations with limited upward adjustment amplitude. Recently, steel enterprises entering the market to tender for ferromolybdenum include Jiangsu Shagang, Jiangsu Nangang, Hengyang Valin Steel Tube, Shougang Group, Shanxi Taigang, Hebei Iron & Steel, etc.

In the molybdenum chemical and related products market, under conditions where terminal customer demand was difficult to release and suppliers had low willingness to reduce prices, market heat was relatively flat, but influenced by the strong price-supporting atmosphere in the raw material market, molybdate prices saw tentative increases.

On the news front: Data from the China Iron and Steel Association show that in late January, social inventory of the five major steel varieties in 21 cities was 7.17 million tons, increased by 80,000 tons month-on-month, up 1.1%; decreased by 40,000 tons from the beginning of the year, down 0.6%; decreased by 170,000 tons compared to the same period last year, down 2.3%. By region, social steel inventory in the seven major regions increased month-on-month except for South China and Southwest regions which declined. During the same period, social inventory of the five major steel varieties showed mixed increases and decreases month-on-month, with plate varieties all declining, long product inventory seeing rebar increase and wire rod flat; year-on-year, rebar was the variety with the largest volume reduction and percentage decline, while cold-rolled coil was the variety with the largest volume increase and percentage increase.
