Molybdenum market update on January 28, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market overall showed a dilemma pattern, mainly reflected in most product prices fluctuating within a narrow range and traders' cautious sentiment toward entering the market.

Today, molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and ammonium tetramolybdate prices were approximately RMB 4,050 per tonne-degree, RMB 263,000/ton, and RMB 249,000/ton respectively.

In the molybdenum concentrate market, buying and selling atmosphere in the market was flat. With downstream users basically maintaining rigid demand and suppliers holding strong reluctance to sell while supporting prices, product prices showed no obvious fluctuations temporarily, and new orders were limited.

In the ferromolybdenum market, the overall trend remained under pressure. Factors such as difficulty in lowering raw material sales prices and obvious price-pressing sentiment from steel enterprises made it difficult for intermediate smelters to adjust quotations. However, it is worth mentioning that to ensure normal production, steel enterprises successively entered the market to tender for ferromolybdenum.

In the molybdenum chemical and related products market, the trend remained temporarily stable. With strong price-supporting atmosphere in the upstream market and relatively balanced supply-demand relationship, prices of molybdates, molybdenum powder, and molybdenum bars maintained stable operation.

On the news front: Data from the China Iron and Steel Association show that in mid-January 2026, key statistical steel enterprises produced a total of 18.77 million tons of steel products, with an average daily output of 1.877 million tons, daily output increased by 3.0% month-on-month. By region, East China region steel product daily output increased by 24,000 tons, Southwest region steel product daily output increased by 8,000 tons, Central and South China region steel product daily output increased by 30,000 tons, North China region steel product daily output decreased by 16,000 tons, and Northwest region steel product daily output decreased by 4,000 tons.
