Molybdenum market update on January 22, 2026

The domestic molybdenum market overall showed a relatively weak trend, mainly reflected in some product prices shifting from sideways to downward, slowed downstream inquiry and procurement pace, and increased initiative among suppliers to ship goods.

Today, molybdenum concentrate, ferromolybdenum, and molybdenum powder prices were approximately RMB 4,030 per tonne-degree, RMB 262,000/ton, and RMB 483/kg respectively.

From the bullish factors perspective, first, affected by greater production difficulty coefficients, higher energy prices, and general expectations for the future market, some molybdenum manufacturers have slowed capacity release; second, with the approaching Spring Festival holiday and good development trend in high-tech industries, downstream users basically maintain rigid demand procurement; third, supported by production costs, suppliers have limited room for concessions.

From the bearish factors perspective, first, international molybdenum prices are difficult to rise and easy to fall, which to a certain extent weakens domestic suppliers' confidence in supporting prices; second, affected by larger domestic-foreign price differences and China's restrictions on strategic metal exports, China's molybdenum product imports are relatively high while exports are relatively low; third, compared to before New Year's Day, current molybdenum product prices are at relatively high levels, which is unfavorable for consumers to actively procure.

On the news front: In the fourth quarter of 2025, China's molybdenum product imports totaled 27,849.06 tonnes, increased by 20.66% month-on-month and increased by 31.83% year-on-year; exports totaled 6,323.07 tonnes, decreased by 4.46% month-on-month and decreased by 46.73% year-on-year. Among them, in December, China's molybdenum product imports totaled 10,348.92 tonnes, increased by 29.33% month-on-month and increased by 23.22% year-on-year; exports totaled 1,974.38 tonnes, decreased by 3.39% month-on-month and decreased by 46.87% year-on-year.
