The domestic molybdenum market persists in a downward correction trend, with supportive factors weakening and steel tender prices continuing to decline, shifting consumer market sentiment from a stalemate to a downturn, and increasing industry concerns about future prospects.

Today, molybdenum concentrate price decreased by another 20 yuan/ton-degree, ferromolybdenum price dropped by another 1,000 yuan/ton, and molybdenum bar price fell by another 10 yuan/kg.

On the bullish side, recent frequent high temperatures, heavy rainfall, intensified environmental enforcement, and higher energy prices have led some molybdenum manufacturers to reduce output. Combined with steady downstream demand, the growth in spot market supply remains slow. Additionally, with a complex global economic landscape, relatively high overseas molybdenum prices, and moderate purchasing power of the yuan, imports of molybdenum products into China remain limited. On the bearish side, the weak steel market has prompted steel companies to continuously suppress ferromolybdenum bids, in turn driving down raw molybdenum prices, with recent steel tender price falling below 240,000 yuan/ton. Despite the current downward price trend, prices remain elevated compared to mid-April, fueling strong profit-taking sentiment among suppliers amid low industry confidence in the future.

According to the World Steel Association, in May 2025, the crude steel production of 70 countries/regions included in its statistics totaled 158.8 million tons, decreased by 3.8% year-on-year. Among these, Africa’s crude steel production was 1.9 million tons, increased by 5.5% year-on-year; Asia and Oceania produced 116.6 million tons, decreased by 4.7% year-on-year; the EU (27 countries) produced 11.4 million tons, decreased by 3.1% year-on-year; other European countries produced 3.6 million tons, decreased by 8.8% year-on-year; the Middle East produced 5.4 million tons, increased by 5.3% year-on-year; North America produced 9.5 million tons, increased by 3.4% year-on-year; Russia and other CIS countries plus Ukraine produced 7.0 million tons, decreased by 8.1% year-on-year; and South America produced 3.4 million tons, increased by 4.2% year-on-year.
