Peru's metallic mineral production of copper, gold and molybdenum fell in July, while silver, zinc, lead, tin and iron ore rose, the government said.
Copper output dropped 4.1% to 119,862t, as a 38% decline in output at Antamina and lower production at Southern Copper and Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold's Cerro Verde mine offset gains at Glencore's Antapaccay operation (+23%), plus 30,719t in reported output at Chinalco's recently inaugurated US$3.5bn Toromocho mine, the energy and mines ministry (MEM) said in a report on its website.
Gold output fell 19% to 11,007kg on slumping production at mines operated by Newmont Mining (-17%) and Barrick Gold (-40%). Output has also fallen due to a government crackdown on illegal gold miners in the Amazon jungle. Molybdenum fell 14.6% to 1,441t on declines at Cerro Verde and Southern Copper, according to the ministry.
Silver output rose 11.4% to 343,299kg as Buenaventura and Glencore unit Los Quenuales increased production, while zinc production gained 6% to 120,157t due to production gains at Antamina and Votorantim Metais unit Milpo. Lead output rose 10% to 24,474t as Milpo and Minera Raura increased production.
Tin output at Minsur, the country's only producer, climbed 9% to 2,043t, said the ministry. Tungsten nearly quadrupled to 13t, while cadmium production at Votorantim's Cajamarquilla refinery rose 28.7% to 81t.
Iron ore rose 13.4% to 652,033t at Peru's lone iron ore mine, Shougang Hierro Perú
Minerals account for about 60% of Peru's total exports. Peru is the world's third largest copper, zinc and tin producer.
