Molybdenum is a potent hardening agent and is a constituent of many heat treatable alloy steels. It improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. In iron, it is effective in strengthening and hardening, causing austenite to transform to fine pearlite or bainite.
The addition of molybdenum ensures the steel develops a uniform micro-crystalline structure, augments its hardening ability and eliminates post-temper brittleness. As a result, it possesses greater impact strength and is used in the manufacture of automobile shafts, gears, rolls etc. Molybdenum is also widely used is the manufacture of high speed steels which are used for various cutting instruments like drill pits, milling cutters, cutting tools etc. Other usages include the manufacturing of heat-resistant & acid resistant stainless steels & cryogenic steels.
