Lubrication Mechanisms in Tungsten and Molybdenum Wire

Experiments simulating tungsten and molybdenum wire drawing have been performed involving instrumented drawing of ribbon, using colloidal graphite as the lubricant.

The results show that once a reasonably continuous film of graphite lubricant is provided at the die/ribbon interface, the characteristics of the lubricant are those of graphite.

A simple analytical model in which the friction is an arithmetic mean of the contributions to friction of each of the species on the wire agrees well with experiment.
